Most people learn to play on a basic chess board.  Once you have fallen in love with chess you will soon discover that you want to have your chess pieces readily available.  By having your chess pieces displayed on a chess table it is easier to take advantage of the spur of the moment game.

There are many different styles of chess tables.  One could choose a table that is made specifically for just chess and checkers.  If you also enjoy playing backgammon, there are also tables that let you play chess, checkers or backgammon.

Many chess tables also offer some form of storage.  This storage can be either a large compartment underneath the removable top or drawers with pull knobs.

If you are trying to match your chess table to your current decor there are many types of beautiful hardwoods available.  

High quality chess tables are usually made from maple and walnut or mahogany and briarwood.  Many of the tops are inlaid with genuine Italian Alabaster.  The majority of chess tables will also have an inlaid mosaic border.  I have found that the best quality chess tables will come from Italy, handcrafted by Italian artisans.  These tables will add beauty and class to any room regardless of the decor.    

There are several different styles to choose from.  There are chess tables that have one large pedestal as the base, or a smaller pedestal with 3 or 4 feet.  If you like your furniture less "bulky," choose a table that has 4 thin legs with a storage shelf under the chess board.  

When choosing a chess table make sure you consider the size of your chess pieces.  The base of a chess piece can range from 1 1/8 inch to 2 3/4 inches.  The squares on a chess table will range in size from 1 7/16 inch to 2 1/2 inches.  Also note that the height of the table will range from 24 inches to 27 1/2 inches.  The width will also vary from 16 inches to 26 inches.  

So regardless of the order that you purchase your chess equipment just keep in mind that the chess pieces and the table do need to be compatible.
